July 29, 2015: More than a selfie opportunity…

the mammoth sunflowers planted by Friends of Brower Park with the Crown Heights community are beautiful and provide food for the park’s birds, bees and squirrels. Many park visitors have been taking selfies in the Monarch Butterfly Habitat. Do you know that the sunflower blossom is a compound flower. Each cell that will eventually contain a sunflower seed is a separate floret.This is an example of a natural system that benefits all its members.  For more information about the sunflower [Helianthus annuus] refer to the Wikipedia article on sunflowers, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, and the USDA Plant Database.
